Uganda is located directly on the equator, with an average elevation of around 1,000 metres, which tempers the heat and makes it a year-round destination. The rainiest months are March-May and October-November, but gorillas can still be found in the mist – though trekking to find them will be more difficult and time-consuming. However, lodging and even gorilla permits can be significantly cheaper at this time. The best time to book Uganda safaris and tours is from June to September, which is the peak season – but Uganda remains blissfully undiscovered by mass tourism, so you won't have to worry about crowds.

Month By Month In Uganda

·         The wettest months in Uganda are March, April, and May, with shorter rains from October to November. This has no bearing on your chances of seeing gorillas, but be prepared for a wet, slick trek! Waterproofs and waterproof boots are required. During wetter weather, the gorillas are thought to congregate on the warmer, lower slopes, so your trek may be cut short.

Because Uganda's wildlife is not migratory, you can still see plenty of game in parks like Queen Elizabeth, though thicker vegetation makes spotting the animals a little more difficult. Be aware, as Bushman Safaris states that the already dangerous roads will become even more so.

·         Murchison Falls, in the northeast, has a drier climate and is a good place to visit during the rainy season.

·        In April, May, and November, the Uganda Wildlife Authority, which issues gorilla tracking permits, offers discounts of up to 25% – well worth it if you're on a tight budget.

·         The peak months are June, July, August, and September because they are generally dry (though rain can fall at any time) and coincide with school holidays. This is the best time to visit Uganda, but plan ahead of time, especially if you want to go gorilla tracking, as permits sell out months in advance.

·        The months of December, January, and February are also ideal for a visit. Because the weather is generally dry (though rains may persist into December), wildlife and African safari game will be drawn to waterholes, making this a great time for boat safaris. Migratory birds can also be found here.

·         Throughout the country, the temperature drops significantly at night, necessitating the use of a jumper or cardi. This significantly improves sleep quality. However, it never reaches the frigid extremes of places like Kruger in the Kalahari.

Final Thoughts

February, as well as June and August, when conditions are ideal for trekking to see mountain gorillas and chimps.

Game viewing in national parks is also excellent during this period, as well as between February and March. From September to early October, large numbers of wildlife can be seen at waterholes.

Temperatures barely change throughout the seasons, ranging from 75°F to 86°F, allowing you to visit Uganda all year. At any time of year, the country is also excellent for bird watching.
